Design Workshop with Refugee Youth

The Digital Design Fabrication Workshop was conducted for unaccompanied refugee youths in Athens, Greece between September 26th – October 9th. For the past few weeks, we trained the youths to build their capacity by teaching them relevant hands-on and digital skills.

The youth were taught on basic computer skills, how to build a 3D printer, and how to design using computers (CAD). By the end of the Ten-day workshop, they managed to build two 3D printers and able to design and print their designs using the 3D printers they built.

The focus of the workshop was not the machines but more the transformative process of learning skills which they applied to build something cool in the end.

The youth learned a myriad of skills such as soldering, metalwork, basic programming, basic CAD, 3D printer fabrication and 3D printing. All these skills came together as the youth designed and printed personalized trinkets and models on the 3D printers they built themselves.

In just 10 days we witnessed the transformative power of design and fabrication. The youth learned teamwork and were able to openly express themselves more confidently as they built and worked together to create.

The Digital Design Fabrication Workshop is in collaboration with Faros, MIT D-Lab, AB3D, and supported by UNHCR.
